Don’t Waste Who You Are

So I am currently reading a book by James Perry called “I still Want to Be an Astronaut”. In the book he talks about how to be comfortable with yourself and how to unlock your potential.

In the book he quotes Kurt Cobain.

“Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.”

I was reflecting on that phrase this evening. It got me thinking about my day and even things farther in the past.

There have been many times where I have wished I was someone else, or had different skills or different talents. There have been many times where I wish I was skinnier, more outgoing, etc.

Yes, there are things I wish were different. But there are many things I have that make me unique and skills that I can contribute to this life.

If I constantly complain, rant, and wish I was something else, then I am wasting my own potential and my time.

“It makes me wonder what potential I have that I’m not harnessing. What potential do you have that you aren’t harnessing? I believe you have more than you’ll ever be able to use. Instead of worrying about who likes you, think instead about how many meaningful friendships you could have if you took the time to be a good friend to others? There’s no limit. What skills or interests could you discover if you took only ten extra minutes a day to try something new? That’s only ten fewer minutes of playing Fortnite or doing your makeup or watching ice cream melt.”

-James Perry

What potential do I have that I am not harnessing? I believe a lot. I believe there are a lot of things that we don’t even know we are capable of yet. I am kind of in this stage right now. I am trying to figure out and unlock more of my potential. I am currently trying to figure out what I can offer. It’s been rough, but I know that it will be worth it one day.

“Don’t settle for less. If you would rather have anyone’s life other than your own, your perspective needs work … You need to believe more in your potential, because you would be surprised what you can make out of the sourest lemons.”

-James Perry

I hope all of you go easy on yourself. There are many things we may wish to change, but don’t dwell on all the negative things. Look for the ways that you can make this world a better place. Look for ways that you can learn new skills, and become an even better version of yourself.

Love,
